October 14th – book donation pick-up at Melford

In October 2016, Pastor Love informed our community of a book donation project for Nigeria, spearheaded by Rev. Sang Sun Park, special emissary appointed by True Parents.   A service project like this is an opportunity to reach out to our neighbors, local churches and other groups in the next four weeks.

On Saturday, October 14th,  Rev. Park’s son, Sunghoon Park, will bring a truck to Melford to collect all book donations from our area.

Here is an excerpt from a recent email Sunghoon wrote about the project:

·         We're organizing the book drives to donate educational books to the public libraries in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria. The books can be of any kind/genre as long as there's some sort of educational component to it. They can be non-fiction, fiction, children's literature, picture books.  We're not putting any major restrictions at this point, just some common sense filtering (e.g., no adult content pieces please!).

·         My dad is leading the effort. He was a Special Envoy of FFWPU and UPF in Nigeria until recently and is now the regional chairman of UPF Oceania and of FFWPU Oceania. Because he is now based in Australia, he will push for a major effort to connect Nigeria and Australia (both English-speaking countries) through this project.

·         This summer he was able to successfully establish a Memorandum of Understanding with the state government of Akwa Ibom in Nigeria.

·         We've actually founded and completed a similar project for the Republic of Congo back in 2014-2015. Back then my dad coordinated the efforts with FFWPU/UPF France and Congo to collect French books since Congo is a French-speaking country. I led smaller fundraising/awareness-building efforts here in Northern Virginia Family Church, ACLC Virginia, and the DC church center. We were able to deliver over 40,000 books to Marien Ngouabi University in Brazzaville, Congo.

All that to say, we hope the project for Nigeria does not just stop with the book donation. Our goal is to continue the working relationship with the communities in Nigeria to ultimately help promote positive youth and family development there and hopefully in many more places in the world through a similar initiative.
